Jasper Johns: Regrets

A major art world event…What makes this small show so rewarding is a sense of joining a modern master on a profound visual journey.

12 September – 14 December 2014

From 12 September toÌý14 December 2014, The Courtauld Gallery displayed major new works by Jasper Johns, one of the world51²è¹Ý¶ù greatest living artists.

RegretsÌýwas a haunting series of ten paintings and drawings inspired by an old photograph of Lucian Freud posing in Francis Bacon51²è¹Ý¶ù London studio.

Johns transformed the image by copying, mirroring and doubling it. Unexpectedly, the form of a skull emerged in his new composition, like an apparition.

Johns reworked the subject in a variety of media, creating works that can be experienced as a profound meditation on mortality, creativity and memory.

This exhibition was based upon one originally organised by , New York.
