Using the work of Monet as a startingpoint, this landmark exhibitionexamines the role gardens played inthe evolution of art from the early 1860sthrough to the 1920s. Monet, arguablythe most important painter of gardensin the history of art, once said he owedhis painting “to flowers”. But Monetwas far from alone in his fascinationwith the horticultural world, andtherefore the exhibition also includesmasterpieces by Renoir, Cézanne,Pissarro, Manet, Sargent, Kandinsky,Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt and Klee. Exhibition curator and CourtauldAlumna Ann Dumas (MA History ofArt 1981) will introduce these beautifulworks and discuss the stories of ٳartists who made them.
